made with LOVE

I'm leaving on a jet plane to Asia tomorrow. I've had some time on my hands this week to make gifts for my South African friends over there, so I decided to make them pretty sweet hair accesories and broaches to add to their little 'love hampers' from home. They are relatively inexpensive to make and light weight for easy transport - besides, Ive always wanted to try my hand at making alice-bands.

10 minutes to making a little girl's dreams come true

I made my niece a ballet tutu yesterday. Such a fun and easy way to delight a little princess...the best part is that you don't even have to thread a needle to make this! Simply cut netting into about 8cm panels and tie it around an already tied elastic waist band. You can finish it off with a satin bow...or with whatever you like for that matter - you can be as creative as you like (bells, ties, plastic packets, whatever you can find).

stamping snowmen

My 5 year olds just loved this art activity. We began by stamping the snow bodies with 2 sponges (dipped in watered down white pva paint) and used a roller to apply the 'snow' on the ground. When that was dry we added our material, buttons and paper details and we finished our snowmen off by drawing their stick arms with black marker pens.

We won't comment on the irony of a 'white Christmas' in the sweltering heat of an African December, will we...

mommy's day 'polaroid' pictures

My children started by drawing the outline of their mom's face with black pastel on a square piece of white cardboard. They then set off searching through magazines with a pair of scissors to find their features. We nursery-dyed the background and finished them off by adding touches of material, ribbon and sequence. The cards were then laminated with a poem and the child's handwritten name on the back. I told them to get dad to help them make mom breakfast in bed while popping this on the tray (with a handpicked flower from the garden) as a sweet surprise. So much fun!

The funniest thing is that these pictures look EXACTLY like their moms!

the making of a chandelier

Over the last 2 months, we have been collecting and threading bottle-tops to make a chandelier. A lot of work went into this piece but the children were very inspired as it began to take form.

The finished 'recycle art' piece on the night of our art auction.
