i heart chalk

A fun way to encourage creative expression in those kids who prefer free outdoor activities, is to allow them to draw on concrete surfaces with giant sticks of colourful chalk - they can even add water and experiment with mixing colours. This is both fun, sensopathic and low maintenance and allows hours of fun for even the most active child.

I enjoy drawing the basic outlines with the children as we explore our imaginations together - each child adding an element to the overall story of our picture. Group activities are also great for encouraging children who feel insecure about their abilities, as they tend to feel less conspicuous, and more likely to participate free from the fear of comparison. It breaks my heart that kids as young as 3, are able to feel this way and Ive made it my passion to encourage room for true creative expression where ALL work is equally praised and the creative process (manner in which they got to the desired outcome) is more important than final aesthetics. This completely goes against that of the secular art world which seeks to create performance based recognition - true to pop culture of our time.

There is little more inspiring than a child's unbridled imagination and the key to being a good facilitator of their raw creativity is allowing them to explore those realms of their understanding where anything is possible. Its amazing how quickly children can loose themselves in their imaginations when a 'grown-up' shows interest in their stories, asking them open-ended questions that direct and channel them to becoming part of their fantasies. This is one of my most favorite thing to do in life. This is also true of encouraging children's sensitivity to the supernatural and an awareness to encountering and releasing Heaven in their daily lives. The spiritual realm defies human understanding and as Jesus himself said, we must become like little children to experience the Kingdom of Heaven.
